Elizabeth Colbert Busch, the leading candidate to receive the Democratic nomination for the First Congressional Seat, received two endorsements on Thursday. One of the largest labor unions in the district, the AFL-CIO, and Charleston Mayor Joe Riley, announced they would support Colbert Busch. “Elizabeth’s business experience with the maritime industry and Clemson University helps her understand that when labor and management work together everyone wins. Three of the candidates had an easy election due to concerted efforts. Rep. Wendell Gilliard and I, sent out 43,000 emails and mailed several thousand flyers to Charleston County residents for our candidates. Matesse Miller had the support of the Charleston County Chamber of Commerce, Mayor J. Riley, Mayor K. Summey and Mayor B. Swails. A push from the White House to finish all the reviews on the Port of Charleston deepening project by 2015 has local officials excited. "This announcement represents more good news for our deepening project, and demonstrates that the highest levels of our government understand the critical need to advance this project," Jim Newsome, president and CEO of the South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA), said in a press release. While undecided Republican voters lined up at the Sottile Theater, a block away Charleston Mayor Joesph P. Riley, Jr. called a press conference with College Democrats to talk up President Barack Obama's record in the White House and take shots at his GOP challengers. Pair of Charleston State House Members cite Charleston's successes
Charleston area State Representatives Leon Stavrinakis (D-Charleston) and Jim Merrill (R-Charleston) endorsed Charleston Mayor Joe Riley for election to a 10th term on Saturday. Stavrinakis, whose district covers much of West Ashley, John's Island, Kiawha and Seabrook, said Riley is a proven leader. Cruise industry cited in international list of threatened sites.
Charleston’s historic district is listed among 67 sites in the world most threatened to lose valued historic significance due to development. The list, released this week by the World Monument Fund, lumps the city’s historic district with a 13th Century Hopi settlement in Arizona and a 5th Century Buddhist Temple in China, among others. The city can blame an expanding cruise tourism business for the designation, but not everyone agrees that the designation is justified. “Charleston Historic District … now accommodates massive cruise ships that release throngs of tourists into the city.
