Obituary by J. Henry Stuhr Margot Strauss Freudenberg of Charleston, South Carolina died April 8, 2013 at the age of 105 at her residence. Mrs. Freudenberg was born in Hannover, Germany August 8, 1907. The youngest daughter of Dr. Henry and Ella Strauss, she was a survivor of the Holocaust after leaving her native Germany in 1939. Staying a brief time in England, Mrs. Freudenberg, her son and husband emigrated to Charleston. She held South Carolina physical therapy license number five and for many years was the only physical therapist in Charleston. In addition to her professional duties, she was a tireless volunteer for community non-profits. It was through her diligence and leadership that the first American Cancer Society Hope Lodge in …

Sgt. Aaron X. Wittman, 28, died Jan. 10 from injuries suffered during a firefight in Afghanistan's Nangarhar Province.
A 3rd Infantry Division soldier was killed Thursday in Afghanistan, according to a Fort Stewart press release. Sgt. Aaron X. Wittman, 28, a 2007 graduate of The Citadel, died from injuries suffered when his unit was attacked during a patrol in the Nangarhar Province of Afghanistan. Wittman, a native of Chester, Va., was an infantryman assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team. He joined the Army in 2008 and arrived at Fort Stewart in February of 2012. His awards included the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star, according to the release. This was Wittman's second deployment. A memorial service remembering Charleston County's former school district superintendent will be held on Friday at Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church. Maria Goodloe-Johnson died on Dec. 5 after a year-long battle with lung cancer. The service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the church at 7396 Rivers Avenue in North Charleston. Senator's wife died Sunday at 77.
Rita Liddy "Peatsy" Hollings, 77, died Sunday after a long, private battle with Alzheimer's disease, according to a report from The Post and Courier. Hollings was the wife of former U.S. Sen. Fritz Hollings. The couple had been married for 41 years. Democratic consultant Lachlan McIntosh remembered Peatsy Hollings as one half of a "real Capital Hill power couple." "Peatsy was a charming, strong, and effective advocate for our state," he told Patch. "As a former school teacher, she had a special passion for public education." A much-loved husband, father, son and brother, Mark G. Manocchio, 31, formerly of Kearneysville, WV, passed away suddenly Aug. 13, 2012. He had an exuberant love of life, an adventurous spirit, and a quick wit. Mark was a world-traveler who grasped every opportunity presented. He was active until the last day of his life, having just moved days earlier to his dream home near the beach in Mt. Pleasant, S.C., enjoying fun in the sun with his daughters while awaiting the homecoming of his newborn baby girl. Virginia B. Owens Derrick, 91, of Cameron Blvd, Isle of Palms, wife of Otis R. Derrick passed away Thursday, August 2, 2012 at Savannah Grace Nursing Home in Mt. Pleasant. Born March 13, 1921 in Kanawha County, WV, she was a daughter of the late Harvey H. and Madge Morris Owens. Mrs. Derrick retired from retail management in 1984. She was a member of Advent Christian Church, Ladies of the Shrine and VFW Auxiliary. In addition to her husband of 75 years, she is survived by a daughter, Catherine "Sue" Derrick Bartee (Jimmie) of Isle of Palms; two sisters; three grandchildren, Beth, Lee, and Troy; four great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren. Update: 6 p.m. -- In addition to Richland County's Ryan Rawl, the S.C. National Guard has named two other South Carolinians killed in Wednesday's suicide attack in Afghanistan. Maj. Gen. Robert Livingston, Jr, the state's Adjutant General, identified the other soldiers as Spc. John Meador II of Columbia, and Sgt. 1st Class Matthew Bradford "Brad" Thomas of Easley. Five guardsmen were also wounded in the attack, Livingston said. Supreme Court ruling gives re-election to four incumbents.
Eight candidates in Charleston County races are off the ballots today after party leaders determined they did not file the proper financial disclosure paperwork. The removals come after the South Carolina Supreme Court ruled candidates who did not file financial disclosure paperwork must come off the ballot. Locally, Democrats are feeling the pinch most severely. Six local Dems were tossed from the ballot, according to party records.
