Tackling overcrowding in Mt. Pleasant's schools

We should be very proud of our local schools.  Mt. Pleasant has intentionally and uniquely positioned itself to continue to win by having an "A" rating for all 12 of our the public schools.  Mt Pleasant will also likely be named as "One of the best places to live" by Money Magazine again since we have one of the National Principals of the Year right here at our own Wando High School.  But with all of the awards, recognition and great quality of life we enjoy in Mt Pleasant we have experienced growth and continued overcrowding issues with many of our public schools. The word about our great community is out and we can anticipate that people will continue to relocate into our town, especially in the area north of I-526.

This is an area very near and dear to my heart as I have three sons in the school system in the north area of Mt. Pleasant.  My youngest son Domenic, who is an 8th grader at Cario Middle School, has first lunch, which starts at 10:25AM!  All of the issues from the overcrowding of our schools in the north area of Mt. Pleasant are alive and real within my own household.  My older two sons (Parker & Avery) both attend Wando High School.  We are very anxiously awaiting the completion of the new Middle College and lunch room expansion to hopes that it will help relieve the overcrowding at Wando.

I firmly believe that Mt. Pleasant Town Council needs to have a close working relationship with the Charleston County school board.  The Town Council needs to be the voice for the residents of our great Town -- all of our residents deserve to have their voices and their concerns heard.

The issues surrounding Mt. Pleasant schools will dominate our Town for the coming years, as we continue to grow.  We must work together to creatively find funding and school placement solutions that are outside the box.  The possibility of opening of a Magnet School in Mt Pleasant combined with the additional 600 seats at Jennie Moore and Laing Middle School is a start but not a complete solution for the overcrowding school issues in Mt. Pleasant.  Should I earn your vote, I look forward to having the opportunity for Mt. Pleasant to have an open and creative dialogue with Charleston County School Board.
