Freezin' for a Reason: Thousands Take Plunge on Sullivan's Island

New Year's Day event attracts throngs to celebrate 2012, give money to Special Olympics.

More than 13,000 people swarmed Sullivan's Island for the Dunleavy's Polar Plunge. In its 18th year, the event may have raised more than $50,000 for the athletic program that benefits people with intellectual disabilities.
