College of Charleston Baseball Hosts Wofford This Weekend

Series comes at critical time for Cougars.

College of Charleston (12-5, 4-2) will host the Wofford Terriers (8-9, 0-0) in an important conference series after the Cougars dropped two mid-week games against UNC-Wilmington and Coastal Carolina. Game times are slated for 6 p.m., 3 p.m. and 1 p.m.

CofC was held to just four hits against the Chanticleers on Wednesday, while UNC-Wilmington recorded 16 strikeouts on Tuesday night. College of Charleston will look to get the bats going against a Wofford team that allows opponents to hit .256 and have an ERA of 4.44.

Wednesday’s loss marked just the first for the Cougars on the road this season.

Scouting the Terriers

Wofford enters this weekend after falling to East Tennessee State on Wednesday and losing two of three from Eastern Kentucky over the weekend.

This will be Wofford’s first conference set after most of the conference teams opened up last weekend.

The Terriers were picked 10th in the preseason conference poll and Konstantine Diamaduros was named to the preseason second team. Diamaduros currently leads the team with 15 RBIs, despite hitting just .234.

Stephen Cantrell (.417) and Mac Doyle (.400) each have batting averages over .400, and Doyle has tallied 13 RBIs this year with a .662 slugging percentage. Cantrell is second in the SoCon in batting average.

The Terriers have struggled in the field this season as they rank last in the SoCon with a fielding percentage of .935.

CofC In the Statistical Rankings

The Cougars currently lead the SoCon in pitching with a team ERA of 2.26 and an opposing batting average of just .200. The staff ERA ranks fourth nationally*, while the Cougars are second in the NCAA in hits allowed per nine innings (6.56).

Christian Powell leads the league with a stellar ERA of 0.70, which is 22nd in the country. Ryan West is third in the SoCon in opposing batting average with .165. After his three saves last week, David Peterson has moved into second place in the SoCon for saves with 5. That mark ranks seventh nationally.*

Marty Gantt is second in the conference and 15th* in the country in runs scored with 21 and is fourth in the SoCon in batting average (.412). Gantt is fifth in on-base percentage (.487) and sixth in stolen bases (8).

Slugger Daniel Aldrich moved into first place in the conference and sixth* in the country in triples with three, while he’s also fourth in the SoCon walks (13).

Going Streaking

Marty Gantt has led the team all season in batting average after opening with a strong series at South Alabama. Gantt currently sports a team-best 14-game reached base streak after his 10-game hit streak was snapped on Saturday.

Patience at the Plate

College of Charleston slugger Daniel Aldrich has shown that he can hit for power. The first team All-American led all freshman in home runs last season and has tallied a slugging percentage of .527 this season with 15 RBIs.

However, Aldrich has made patience at the plate into a prevalent aspect of his game this season. Aldrich leads the team in walks with 13 and his on-base percentage of .423 is second on the team.

Between a rock and a 'Hard' place

Senior Rob Harding has come through when it’s counted this year. 11 of his team-best 17 RBIs have come in 2-out situations, and he is hitting .320 overall when there are two outs. Harding leads the team with an average of .474 with runners in scoring position.

B-Murr, Benz or Bentley

College of Charleston sophomore Brandon Murray hit three home runs in the past week, all of which were solo shots to right field. Murray now leads the team with four long balls as he’s cemented a permanent starting spot in left field.
