Photos: Carrier Classic Called Off

Moisture on the court causes featured game to be called off.

Saturday's NCAA basketball match-up on the USS Yorktown was Patriot Point's chance to shine in the national spotlight.

But with a blimp flying overhead, a 4,500-set stadium set up on the 70-year-old aircraft carrier's deck and throngs watching live on TV, moisture on the court resulted in the game being called off.

Women's teams from Notre Dame and Ohio State were able to complete their game, but the featured game between men's teams from Ohio State and Marquette never happened.

As the sun set and temperatures dipped to 50 degrees, the cour was just too wet, organizers said. Another game on Friday aboard the USS Bataan in Jacksonville, Fla., was similarly called at halftime for moisture concerns.

Organizers aren't sure if they will issue refunds. Most of the 4,500 tickets were given away to soldiers and members of the military. Tickets sold for $500 to $2,500. The event, the second such tournament in history, is a benefit for wounded soldiers and sailors.
