Cougars on Road Tonight

Following weekend streak, CofC in close race for conference first place.

College of Charleston (15-5, 7-2) will face UNC-Wilmington (9-10, 5-1) for the second time in a week with a mid-week road trip to North Carolina on Tuesday. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.

The Cougars are coming off an that situated the squad just two games behind Appalachian State for first place in the conference.

The Cougars used outstanding pitching from Josh Renfro and Matt Pegler to win on Friday and Saturday, and clutch hitting from Brandon Glazer, Marty Gantt and Tyler Jackson to win on Sunday.

Renfro pitched the squad’s first complete game on Friday, allowing one run on four hits while striking out a career-best 11 batters. Pegler was nearly as impressive as he allowed just one run through seven innings. Glazer came off the bench to hit a three-run pinch-hit home run on Sunday to give CofC a 6-4 lead after a nearly five hour-long rain delay. Gantt followed up with a HR on the next at bat and Jackson provided insurance in the eighth inning.

Series Notes

College of Charleston is now 3-3 all-time against UNC-Wilmington after the Seahawks won a 6-3 decision last Tuesday at Patriots Point. Corey Dick led the Way for the Seahawks with a 2-3 day, and William Prince picked up the victory.

Scouting the Seahawks

Since playing the College of Charleston last week, the Seahawks won a weekend series by taking two out of three games to CAA rival Delaware.

UNCW exploded for a 22-3 win on Friday and then shutout the Blue Hens, 7-0, on Sunday. Dick was celebrated with CAA Co-Rookie of the Week honors after posting a .455 batting average and scoring four runs while tallying three RBIs.

CofC In the Statistical Rankings

The Cougars currently lead the SoCon in pitching with a team ERA of 2.22 and an opposing batting average of just .198.

Christian Powell is now second in the league with an ERA of 1.57. Ryan West is second in the SoCon in opposing batting average with .165 and Matt Pegler is right behind him with .171. Josh Renfro is fourth in the league with 30 strikeouts. 

After his save over the weekend, David Peterson stays in second place in the SoCon for saves with 6.

Marty Gantt leads the conference in runs scored with 26 and is second in the SoCon in batting average (.423). Gantt’s slugging percentage of .692 ranks third in the league and his on-base percentage of .495 is fourth.

Slugger Daniel Aldrich is in first place in the conference in triples with three, while he’s tied for third in the SoCon in walks (16).

Going Streaking

Marty Gantt has led the team all season in batting average after opening with a strong series at South Alabama. Gantt currently sports a team-best 17-game reached base streak after his 10-game hit streak was snapped on Saturday.
