Poll: What Should Happen to Failing Schools?

The South Carolina State Board of Education meets Wednesday to decide the fate of two Charleston County schools with chronically bad academic performance, according to reports.

The state board can take control of both Burke High School and North Charleston High School, but one report says that option is unlikely. The board can vote to oust the schools' principals or simply opt to continue ongoing academic support.

School Superintendent Nancy McGinley said both schools now have effective leadership, and she hopes to see greater progress moving forward.

"To change course again would destabilize the progress that's under way," she told the Post and Courier. "My goal is building lasting change that can and will be sustained over time."
