Superintendent McGinley Receives Solid Evaluation; Contract Extended

Charleston County Schools Superintendent Nancy McGinley was given a contract extension on Tuesday night.

The school system released McGinley's evaluation scores Tuesday evening, showing a score of 3.17 on a 4.0 scale. That score "exceeds standard," according to a system news release, but is slightly lower than her 2010 score of 3.25.

The board voted renew McGinley's contract through 2014, according to the news release. Her contract was set to expire in 2013.

“My focus is on results. I work for students," McGinley said in the news release. "Our students and schools are making real progress. This is clear based not on personal agendas or opinions, but facts-the test scores, data, and objective criteria on which 75 percent of my evaluation is based."

The remaining 25 percent, however, is subjective. The board rates her based on "leadership" and 5 percent of the evaluation comes from key staff members.

The school system didn't immediately provide board member's detailed evaluations. The objective portion of the evaluation, based on student achievement, showed "significant progress" in six of eight core areas.

In the areas of number of at-risk schools and in the Adequate Yearly Progress Compliance Index, McGinley was "showing improvement," according to the evaluation.

McGinley, 57, was hired as superintendent in 2007. The county's former chief academic officer was hired with a four-year contract and a $187,000 annual salary, according to the Post and Courier. Details of her current pay were not available Tuesday night.
