Overcrowded Options

Parents of Charleston County School District don't have many options for their children if they are in an overcrowded school.

1. Private school which can be too costly for many.

2. Apply for a magnet school.  This may be an option if you are willing to leave your excellent rated neighborhood school and travel over an hour each way to get to school particularly if you are traveling by bus.

3. Home school

4. Attend an overcrowded school and wait for the rezoning to kick in.

Many parents have chosen option #4 with the hope that the rezoning will happen soon enough to fix the problem.

I would like to pose a question to the members of the community and particularly the school board.

What happens when an overcrowded school is at capacity?  To clarify the term capacity I mean no room for trailers, no classroom space and not even a free conference room.  Where do the children learn? The South Carolina education law states a maximum of 30 students per classroom.  We have hit that number and are very close in many of the overcrowded classrooms in our overcrowded schools.

When do we get to say, that's it we are full?  I think it should be today!!
