Town Considers Texting-While-Driving Ban

Council could vote on ban Tuesday evening.

Mount Pleasant leaders are considering a measure that will make it illegal to text message while driving.

A council committee will take up the issue Tuesday morning, according to Councilman Chris Nickels, who is introducing the measure.

The town has twice previously considered texting-while-driving bans, but the proposals were eventually pulled.

In November 2012, town council appeared ready to pass a ban, but put of the measure because they believed the South Carolina Legislature would pass a more effective statewide ban.

At that time, Councilwoman Thomasena Stokes-Marshall was behind effort. Then Chief of Police Harry Sewell said municipal texting bans are difficult to enforce and confusing for motorists. He said a statewide ban would be more effective.

If the texting ban passes council committee on Tuesday, it could get a vote before the full council in the afternoon. New ordinances require two votes before the full council before becoming law, so at the very least, it couldn't be adopted until August.
