Town Considers Adding Police Station at Carolina Park

Town administrator: Police presence necessary as town grows northward.

Town council is considering a plan to add a police station to planned fire station at Carolina Park.

Town leaders have already approved $1.5 million to design and build the Fire Station No. 6 at Carolina Park, but on Monday town councilmen were presented with plans to add a police substation to that facility.

"I think it's important that we plan for police operation in that location," said Town Administrator Eric DeMoura. "The need for a police presence out there is going to be critical in the near future."

The town is planning for explosive growth north if the Isle of Palms Connector in the coming years as homes get under way at Carolina Park near Wando High School.

A handful of other residential developments are also planned in the extreme northerly parts of Mount Pleasant, but the town's police station is more than 10 miles away off Houston Northcutt Blvd.

DeMoura is asking the council to use the proceeds from the sale of the old Fire Station No. 3 on Johnnie Dodds Blvd. for the construction of the proposed police station. The town has received an offer of $525,000 for that property.

Adding the police station to Fire Station No. 6 could cost about $600,000, DeMoura said.

The town's Police, Judicial and Legal Committee on Monday approved the plans by a 3-0 vote. The proposal must also be vetted by the town's finance committee and the be approved next week by the full council.
