Sound Off: Does Mount Pleasant Need its Own College?

Town, mayor in talks with Francis Marion University.

Mount Pleasant Mayor Billy Swails and council are reportedly in talks with Francis Marion University to open a satellite campus in Mount Pleasant.

The proposal has drawn pockets of criticism, but Swails says the college can fill a void in higher education options for Mount Pleasant kids. Here's why the decision makes sense, according to Town Administrator Eric DeMoura:

While there are three four-year schools in the area, DeMoura said those schools miss a large swath of students. Charleston Southern University is private and The Citadel is a military college.


The College of Charleston is a state university but has higher admission standards, a 10,000 student cap and increasingly relies more on out-of-state students who pay a higher tuition rate to fill the gap of declining state funding.
