Sen. Jim Demint: AARP Is In Dems' Pocket

Slams group in op-ed.

In an op-ed for the Washington, DC-based website Politico, South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint slammed the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) as little more than an arm of the Democratic Party.

In the piece, DeMint claimed that the AARP is an insurance conglomerate that benefits when its members buy Medigap and blocked reforms to Medigap when they were discussed as part of the Affordable Care Act. Additionally, DeMint said the AARP worked closely to craft health care reforms that would be to its benefit.

It is always amusing when someone makes assumptions about the genitalia of Jim DeMint by referencing their belief that he "calls it like it is." If there is an element of proportionality between the two then, given his absolute aversion to "calling it like it is," Jim might well have to give in to testosterone therapy in order to, well, grow a pair. There is nothing new this rant against the AARP. It is the same speech with the same insurance industry talking points that he has given time and again---only, on this occasion, it appears in written form. In other words, Jim is, as is his wont, not "calling it like it is" but "calling it like his insurance industry financial supporters want us to think it is." His perspective on the AARP has been regularly dismissed. But DeMint continues to misrepresent the same issues and repeat the same flawed conclusions because he knows that his supporters aren't paying attention to facts anyway. They vote with their viscera, not with their brains, so facts are essentially irrelevant to them. Like his favored presidential candidate, he "won't let fact-checkers" get in the way of a talking point that resonates with the rabble. Real integrity would seem to require that, if DeMint accuses the AARP of being "in the Dems' pocket," he fully disclose the names and amounts given by insurance industry insiders to his personal Super PAC. I mean, let's see who's in his pocket.

His speech needs more "union thugs" references since people negotiating prices collectively is fundamentally the same thing. I love the imagery of old people not only being for hire thugs but also committing voter fraud by not having a drivers license. Just more proof that the GOP has moved from conservative to regressive.
