DNR Volunteer Charged with Fraud

McClellanville man charged with stealing gas from state.

A Santee Coastal Reserve volunteer is accused of stealing gasoline for himself and his wife, according to a South Carolina Law Enforcement Division news release.

Charles Darren Arthur, 46, has been charged with breach of trust with fraudulent intent, according to court documents. He is accused of filling up his personal vehicles with state gasoline at a DNR pump at the Santee reserve.

As a volunteer, he had access to the pumps, but the gas was only to be used for state vehicles. From September 2011 to February 2012, the reserve was short 346 gallons of gas and video surveillance allegedly shows the man filling up his vehicles four times, according to the SLED news release.

Arthur has been arrested on the charges and authorities say he provided a written confession to the offenses.
