Report: Woman Who Jumped From Bridge Was Missing Pharmacy Student

Reports say 25-year-old pharmacy resident left her purse, ID and car behind.

UPDATE (Dec. 23, 2011 @ 4 p.m.): The coroner has positively identified a body found on Sullivan's Island as that of Tosin Oyelowo.

UPDATE (Dec. 16, 2011 @ 3 p.m.): Second police report offers more details on bridge-jumping case as multiple agencies continue to search the water for Olutosin "Tosin" Oyelowo.

The original story follows:

The woman who reportedly jumped from the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge on Friday was a 25-year-old MUSC student, according to police reports and various online articles.

Olutosin "Tosin" Oyelowo, a Nigerian national with roots in Wake Forest, NC, was last seen by motorists and pedestrians leaping from the Bridge, a Mount Pleasant police report states.

Calls reporting the jumping were received around 3:30 p.m. on Friday, according to reports. Police found Oyelowo's purse and driver's license at the summit of the bridge in the area where callers reported seeing her jump.

Police located Oyelowo's 2007 Toyota Yaris at a convenience store in Mount Pleasant where many pedestrians park to walk along the bridge's pedestrian path.

Water searches for Oyelowo by Mount Pleasant and Charleston police, as well as the U.S. Coast Guard, have not been successful in the days since the jumping was reported.

MUSC reported Oyelowo, a first-year pharmacy resident, missing when she did not report for work on Monday, said Heather Woolwine, university spokeswoman.

"We were concerned for her safety," Woolwine said. "When we couldn't reach her, we contacted police, and now it's really more in their hands."

Several websites list Oyelowo as being "missing" in South Carolina since Dec. 9. Though Mount Pleasant's police report lists the identity, confirmed by the driver's license in her purse and documents in her parked car, Charleston police have not released the jumper's name.

"We won’t know the identity of the person who jumped until the body is recovered," said Charles Francis, police spokesman.

Why would you put an article like this up with her name all over and at the last paragraph state "We won’t know the identity of the person who jumped until the body is recovered," said Charles Francis, police spokesman"

I pray that God should bring Tosin back home safe and alive. We nigerian don't commit suicide, even when things are hard we keep going until it becomes better. Let the police look into her friends list, those she worked with, and the last phone call she received.
Saddened December 16, 2011 at 01:50 PM
These comments are so IGNORANT. All these "we Nigerians..." comments. She jumped off the bridge. She is likely dead. It is sad, it is unfortunate. Who knows her reasoning. Maybe someone had something to do with it? Could've been pressure, family, a secret, who knows. But she was seen jumping. Not being pushed, not being forced, but jumping. Nigerians have problems too. "America" didn't do this to her and this isn't suspect because it's America. She was a bright, beautiful girl. Clearly she had an issue she didn't know how to deal with. It is what it is. Let's focus on loving and being aware when our family/friends have issues, instead of making it seem like people are less than because they are losing their ability to cope. Many "highly cultured" people commit suicide every day. Stop being so ignorant.

Human beings are fragile. No matter where we are from. We must remember to acknowlege that someone may be in pain and can't express it. If it is her she apparantly lost hope. Nam myoho renge kyo!

This is unbelievable and extremely sad....I went to school with Tosin and she did not seem like the type of person that would committ suicide. I wish that she would have reached out to someone in her time of need... She was such a beautiful person on the inside and out. This was not the way for her to go... I hope the the police put all of their efforts in getting to the bottom of this! May God be with her family!

As harsh as Saddened's comments seem, I support what has been said. Those who are accusing the writer of the article should read the pdf file that was attached which is the police incident report that was issued on Dec 6th. Ms Mukete, no one is wishing that she committed suicide however, the based on the facts that the police have so far, and the fact that the family is asking for people to respect their wishes and refrain from circulating stories that she is missing (on the website that was created for Tosin), it seems like that is what may have happened. God will take control and shed light to what is unclear to us. Nigerians go through issues as well as everybody else and in the US, things are more challenging here because there isn't as much support system for people as there is back home. God help us all.

Everyone needs help sometimes even Nigerians. Pls stop playing the blame game.
Nmachi December 16, 2011 at 05:41 PM
I signed up just to say thank you for this comment. It's very depressing when Nigerians don't acknowledge mental illnesses or other stressors (pressure from school, family, relationships, etc) that could lead people to taking their own lives. And no, America does not introduce these problems to the Nigerian psyche. People commit suicides even in Nigeria (I have heard stories). If you belittle a person's struggles no matter how big or small they seem to you they will be less likely to seek help or see a way out of their predicament. Yes, we have not gotten confirmation that it's really Tosin, but we need to speak up for people who are going through challenging times and need help that they may not be able to get because they are not supposed to feel as bad, sad, or depressed as they obviously do.
Mike December 16, 2011 at 05:46 PM
Please reach out to friends and family especially this time of the year. Forget the past and build a strong family and friend relationship. No matter what happen to Tosin, its nerve wrenching even if she walk in tonight. May God answer all the prayer offered for her. May God encourage and strengthen the family.

Nigerians have issues too, they are not God and this pride that they can cope, are strong and work hard should not be idolized at all. There are a lot of workaholics but insane or mentally pressured in some sense. What an African or rather a Nigerian is, is olny by the grace of God. A lot of times in the African society, to be identified with mental pressures or depression, not that this case is related or proved to be, is seen as a sign of weakness, talkless an expression of it, such that any appearance of such is denied. And when not treated on time leads to tragic consequences. God help us in our journey of faith and may the Angel of God locate our dear Sister and bring her back safely.

The Family December 16, 2011 at 10:46 PM
On behalf of the entire Oyelowo family, we express our gratitude to everybody for your prayers, support & expression of love during this period. As most of you are aware, Tosin Oyelowo was reported missing on Friday, December 9, 2011. The Charleston, South Carolina Authorities were notified and have been investigating this incident. The information we have from the Police, which is also available on the Internet as an Incident report, indicates that Tosin's personal effects were discovered around the Ravenel Bridge. This is where the police had gotten a report that someone jumped off the bridge. This is all the information we have for now and a body has not yet been recovered. We continue to covet your prayers and support for the family at this time. The family is in close communication with the Polce. Anyone who has further information should please contact the Charleston, SC police or the family. We sincerely appreciate everyone for the outpouring of love, support, prayers and care for the family.

end-time signs...the devil is ragging like a roaring lion, looking for who to devour! God will surely save our Tosin! come back home love.
Israel Ogie December 17, 2011 at 01:42 PM
Hmm! We should be praying for her soul and not playing hate. She might be mentally pressured and her close friends and relations won't even be observant of red flags she was letting off, now they are the first to play blame. We all have to be observant and care for our loved ones by allowing time for us, listening to others without judging them, assisting the weak. We are not all that strong at all times!
Tlcman December 18, 2011 at 03:36 AM
Chances are she was pushed or thrown there. Where is the suicide note. You don't go missing for several days to commit suicide. You don't pack ur car, pick ur bag and id then put d bag down on d bridge before jumping. Why was d id on d floor and not in the purse? Somebody wanted her identified as having committed suicide.
olu December 18, 2011 at 05:11 AM

May God almighty continue to protect us from this sinful world. This is very sad and i pray that God in HIs mighty power will locate her and keep her save as HE did in the life of Jonah. She will still live to fulfil her destiny in life. This is a big temptation & devilish decision for her to even think of taking her own life because of issue she refuse to share with people not even her parents, close friend or a man of God if she belief in one. A problem shared with sensible & experience people is halve solved Every problem comes with a solution & we are created to solve riddles of life, so commiting sucide is like runing away for your purpose in life. I pray that GOD WILL SHIELD HER &they will soon locate her alive in Jesus name.
