One Dead, One in Custody Following Walmart Stabbing

Twenty-year-old Mount Pleasant man pronounced dead at the scene in altercation with an acquaintance.

A Walmart employee is dead following an argument with an acquaintance.

Police say 20-year-old David “DJ” Moultrie of Mount Pleasant walked into the lobby of the Proprietors Place Walmart, collapsed and then died from stab wounds sustained during an argument with an acquaintance in the parking lot.

Police have detained and are questioning Awendaw resident Darius Green, 18, said Capt. Stan Gragg, Mount Pleasant police spokesman. He identified Green as a “person of interest” in the fatal assault.

The argument erupted before 3 p.m. Wednesday, Gragg said. Officers arrived a short time later and found Moultrie on the floor in the store’s lobby. Moultrie was later pronounced dead at the scene, said Charleston County Coroner Rae Wooten.

Moultrie and Green were acquaintances, but police wouldn’t say how the two knew one another or disclose the nature of their argument.
At the scene, friends and family of Moultrie reportedly streamed from the store in tears.

In their grief, a Walmart shelving unit was pulled to the floor. The loud noise made some bystanders incorrectly believe there had also been a shooting inside the store, Gragg said.

The Walmart was closed from around 3 p.m. until around 7 p.m., but is now open to customers. Wooten said Moultrie’s remains will be autopsied Thursday morning.
