Mount Pleasant Mayor Billy Swails and Mount Pleasant Town Council recognized at Tuesday's Council meeting PFC Ryan Haag with the Employee of the Month Award.

On July 27, at approximately 7 p.m., PFC Haag was conducting bike patrol on the Ravenel Bridge when he encountered a young man who had partially climbed over the safety fencing of the bridge. PFC Haag convinced the young man to climb back over the fencing and assisted him to a safe location.

The young man was visibly shaken and upset and when asked why he had climbed over the fence told PFC Haag that he had intended to commit suicide by jumping from the bridge. At this point PFC Haag took the young man into emergency protective custody so he could get the help he needed.

“The police department had not received any calls regarding this incident,” said Town Administrator Eric DeMoura. “Had it not been for the keen observation and quick thinking of PFC Haag, a life may have been lost.”
