Officer Arrested on DUI Charges

Charleston officer stopped in Mount Pleasant.

A Charelston Police officer has been arrested and charged with DUI after a weekend traffic stop in Mount Pleasant, according to a Charleston Police Department statement.

This is the statement from Charles Francis, police spokesman:

Early this morning, Monday, February 27th, the Charleston Police Department was advised by the Mount Pleasant Police Department that they had arrested a Charleston Police Officer for driving under the influence.

The officer has been identified as Officer John Woods. Based on the charge, Officer Woods has been placed on administrative leave without pay pending the outcome of this matter.

Court records show Woods, 28, posted a $995 bond this morning and was released. His address as listed as being in Mount Pleasant.

The officer, who told police he was celebrating a fellow officer's move to the Upstate, said he had 5 or 6 beers at Wild Wing Cafe, according to a police incident report.

Woods refused to take a breath test at the police department, but the incident report describes Woods' poor performance on field sobriety tests, which include standing on one leg, saying the alphabet and other tests.

Before being placed in custody, Woods told the arresting officer "I better not catch you in Charleston City," according to the report.
