Another Setback for Injured Musician

Musician injured in Aug. 3 accident loses entire left leg.

The Mount Pleasant musician critically injured in an Aug. 3 accident on Daniel Island has suffered another medical setback, according to his father.

"The surgeons have done a tremendous job of saving my son's life ... unfortunately they are not able to save his left leg and will amputate the entire leg soon," Nick Collins Sr. wrote on Facebook Wednesday.

Surgeons had left part of the leg during other surgeries, the family said, but this latest news is even more discouraging because it could seriously limit Collins' long-term mobility.

"Due the extent of the trauma ... he will not be eligible for a prosthetic leg," his father wrote. "He will be able to get around on one leg with crutches and a wheel chair."

The family writes that they are still hopeful about Collins' long-term progress. The popular "Fowler's Mustache" musician suffered life-threatening injuries when he was tossed from an SUV in which he was a passenger and then run over by a passing 18-wheeler or box truck.

Police are still investigating the incident.

"He is alive and will survive," his sister wrote on CaringBridge.org blog. "He will be able to sing and play his guitar and continue to pursue his passion of music. Most of all we will all see his smiling face soon. We will know more in a couple of days after the teams meet and discuss with us our options."

More than 100 individuals turned out Tuesday for a blood drive in Collins' honor. WCBD-TV is planning a follow-up drive later in the month.

A online fundraiser to defer the 26-year-old's medical costs has raised $22,000 towards the family's $50,000 goal. Several fundraisers are planned, including a 6 p.m. Thursday event at Midtown in Downtown Charleston. Read more about the fundraising.
