Citadel Denies ReVille Negligence

College denies responsibility for ReVille's alleged abuse after 2007 incident when unreported.

The Citadel is defending itself against claims that it could have stopped alleged abuser Louis "Skip" ReVille from victimizing more young boys, according to court papers filed this week.

A mother of one of ReVille's alleged victims brought the suit, contending the public military college could have stopped ReVille from victimizing more young men — including her child — if the school had acted on sex-abuse allegations it received in 2007.

ReVille, a married father of three and a former private school principal, was on six counts of criminal sexual conduct with three teenage boys. Since that arrest, have been filed and Hanahan police have launched their own investigation. He’s being held on more than $1 million in bond.

This week, the college both denied the allegation and said courts don't allow the mother to bring the lawsuit in the first place, according to the Post and Courier.

In its response, the military college stated that it "specifically denies any and all allegations that imply or suggest it knew of ReVille's dangerousness in 2007," the newspaper reports.

Among other things, the response states that the lawsuit fails to state a legal reason why the courts should compensate the mother for emotional distress. The school insists it had no ties to the mother at the time of the alleged abuse and no legal duty to warn her about ReVille. The school further argues that the mother's claims are barred under the South Carolina Tort Claims Act.

Despite saying the claims were "believable," . Instead, the discussion mostly centered around financial payouts or other compensation to the alleged victim.

The Citadel has hired an outside entity to evaluate its handling of the ReVille accusation. The college is seeking a jury trial on the lawsuit.
