Bomb Squad Called for Civil War Round

Ancient device in flower bed causes downtown closure.

A downtown Charleston park has been closed following the discovery a Civil War eplosive this afternoon.

Charleston Police have closed off the area around the MUSC Horse Shoe, near Doughty Street and Ashley Avenue, after a Civil War round was found in a flower bed, according to Charles Francis, police spokesman.

The Charleston PD Explosive Devices Team is on the scene, and the Air Force Explosive Devices Team will take control of the device and remove it, Francis said.

The Horse Shoe has been cordoned off and is not accessible by motorists or pedestrians.
