Trident United Way Provides Tips for Tricky Treats

Charleston–  Trick or Treat? The spirit of Halloween can have a frightening amount of sugar, calories, and fat. With childhood obesity levels soaring to new heights, Trident United Way provides these tips for a healthier Halloween.

Anne Bergin, Trident United Way’s Director of Health and Public Policy, recommends nutritional options that are pre-packaged, portable, and contain less sugar than a candy bar. These include mini packs of raisins, unsalted pretzels, whole grain goldfish and 100 percent natural juice boxes. There are also plenty of non-food options such as Halloween-themed pencils, books, stickers, and toys.

“I’m always trying to avoid adding to the candy haul,” Bergin said.  “The best candy alternative ever was the year I set up a water station and handed out cups of cool water. Lowcountry Halloween can be hot, inside of a costume!”
