Walking Tour Highlights Old Village History

Town walking program offers insight into Mount Pleasant's roots.

Utilizing historical markers created by the Town of Mount Pleasant Historical Commission, The Moultrie Middle School Wellness Committee has developed the Old Village Historical Marker Walking Tour based on the sound belief that learning is often optimized when paired with physical activity.

“This unique tour can be used by teachers, classes, families, teachers and the community to explore the natural beauty and history of the Old Village,” said Kiera Reinertsen, Town Planner III and Moultrie Middle School Wellness Committee Member. “It makes learning fun, it helps children practice skills learned in school and it provides an opportunity for family bonding and friendship building. Walking distances range from 3.2 to 4.5 miles, if you include the Cove Inlet Historical Marker.”

"The Historical Marker Walking Tour is a perfect fit for Moultrie Middle School and our Wellness Committee,” said school nurse Nancy Baker, RN, NCSN. “We were excited to incorporate the Town’s historical markers into this program to encourage an active and healthy lifestyle through nutrition and physical activities for families. We sponsor events throughout the school year such as walking clubs, activity clubs and educational events for students, families and staff members that promote healthy lifestyles."

The tour includes 20 markers within easy walking distance from each other. They include topics such as:
