Charleston County Sponsoring Earth Day Art Contest

Kids have until March 20 to enter for cash awards.

Charleston County Government’s Environmental Management Department is once again asking students in kindergarten through sixth grade to submit artwork for the 2013 Charleston County Earth Day Festival design contest. The deadline to submit artwork is 4 p.m. on Friday, March 22, 2013.

The theme this year is “One Earth, One Future.”

“Our annual Earth Day Art Contest is intended to highlight the creative talents of Charleston County students and to promote the 2013 Earth Day Festival,” said Bronwyn Santos, Charleston County Environmental Management Department’s Community Representative. “We encourage students to become environmental stewards so they can have a positive impact on the future of our earth.”

The winning artwork design will be printed on this year’s Earth Day Festival T-shirts. Charleston County Council will acknowledge the artist at a regular Council meeting, and the artwork will be framed and presented to the winning student at the Charleston County Earth Day Festival on Saturday, April 20, at Riverfront Park in North Charleston.

Contest submission rules
• Entries must be submitted by 4 p.m. on Friday, March 20, 2013.
• The image should convey the theme of the Earth Day Festival, “One Earth, One Future.”
• Students must be residents of Charleston County and must be in kindergarten through sixth grade.
• Only one entry can be submitted per student.
• Entries can be mailed or hand-delivered to the Charleston County Recycling Center;

• Submissions to the contest will become the property of Charleston County’s Environmental Management Department.

Entry Specifications
• The art must be the student’s original work.
• The two-dimensional image should not be larger than 8½ inches x 11 inches in size. Artwork can be in color or black and white.
• Students must attach a sheet of paper to their work listing their name; home address/city/state/zip; student’s phone number; student/parent email; school name; teacher’s name; teacher’s email; student’s grade; and student’s age. Students must provide all information requested to be eligible to win.
• Prizes will be awarded!
• First place winner receives a $150 gift card from Wonder Works and the artwork will be used as the design for the official festival T-shirt, which will be sold at the event.
• Second place winner receives a $100 gift card from Wonder Works.
• Third place receives a $50 gift card from Wonder Works.

Charleston County’s 2013 Earth Day Festival will be held on the Saturday (April 20) prior to National Earth Day, which is Monday, April 22, 2013. Earth Day was established as a national holiday in 1970, and is now celebrated by over a half-billion people around the world.
