Updated: Local Auctioneer Vies for World Title

Linda Page competes Friday for National Auction Association's world championship title.

Update 3 p.m. Friday: Linda Page competed for the international title but was not a finalist. The competition continues until about 6:30 p.m. when an overall winner we be selected.

The original story appears as follows:

Mount Pleasant auctioneer Linda Page is headed to Indianapolis Friday to compete in the International Auctioneer Championship.

The daylong competition is worth a $5,000 prize and yearlong duties as the public face for the National Auctioneers Association. This is Page's second attempt at the title in her 30-year career, but this time she thinks she's better prepared.

"I've been spending a lot of time on my poise, my appearance and my command of the audience," Page said. "I'm not really a girly-girl, so I've leaned on a lot of my friends to help me improve my wardrobe."

Owner of Page's Thieves Market on Chuck Dawley Blvd. in Mount Pleasant, Page spends many of her weekends conducting auctions all over the Lowcountry. Winning the title, she says, is good for business but it's mostly an honor.

"Being recognized by my peers would be a tremendous honor," said Page, who is also a town councilwoman. "And when national news outlets or others want to discuss auctioneering, they turn to the world champion. Being that public face for the association would be a tremendous honor."

Page is one of 27 women competing this year for the title. On the men's side of the competition 73 individuals are competing. The competition starts early in the morning, and if Page is a finalist, she'll continue to compete until late in the evening.
