The proposed expansion to Shem Creek Park will replace a damaged privately owned boardwalk that spans several restaurants along the waterway.
The $1.6 million boardwalk will connect Coleman Blvd. to the boardwalk by a set of stairs and connect the park's current terminus to the boardwalk. When complete, the park's trails and boardwalks will form a loop.

The current boardwalk is popular with diners who eat at the creek's seafood restaurants. It's also used by shrimpers and fishermen. Though the town will take ownership of the boardwalk, it will remain accessible by both pedestrians and boaters and fishermen, according to town officials.
Shem Creek Park first opened in 20011. It cost $8.5 million and took just less than 3 years to complete.
Once approved, this expansion could take roughly 18 months to complete. A large portion of that timeline is absorbed by permitting. Town council must first approve the expansion. A public hearing is planned for 6 p.m. May 28 at town hall.
