Rugged Maniacs Headed to Mount Pleasant Saturday

Event at Boone Hall pushes athletes to their brink — and their dirtiest — in brutal outdoor course.

Last year, hundreds of extreme athletes braved the mud, barbed wire and more mud at Boone Hall Plantation for the Rugged Maniacs 5K obstacle course, and apparently folks are eager to put themselves through it again this year.

The franchise, which travels to venues all across the country, challenges runners to complete a course that is not only physical (think boot camp-style trenches and barbed wire) but that is also muddy, dirty and otherwise unpleasant.

In the end, participants are awarded with a splash in an even muddier pool and a cold beer in Boone Hall's tomato patch. Interested in taking part? Registration officially ended March 1, but the website was still accepting participants this week, and spectators are welcome.
