Report: Sequestration Could Cost Lowcountry $173M

Rep. Tim Scott's district could lose more than $140.8 million alone in defense contracts, according to report by right-wing organization.

The Lowcountry could lose $173 million in military contracts by the 10-year, $500 billion cuts to the nation's defense budget under sequestration, according to a right-wing think tank specializing in national defense.

Sequestration is an automatic, near trillion dollar spending cut triggered in 2013 unless Congress passes a debt reduction measure by Dec. 31.

This means an 18 percent reduction in military spending or about $173 million reduction in economic impact in the tri-county area, according to The Center for Security Policy.

Rep. Tim Scott's S.C. First Congressional District has more than 300 military contracts and could lose $140.8 million in defense contracts, according to the reports.

The Congressional District Reports provide a 2011 baseline to see how congressional districts may be affected by the planned across-the-board sequestration cuts in the 2013 defense budget.

Here are potential negative economic impacts in S.C. First Congressional District, based on 2011 data:

  • City of Charleston: $29.3 million
  • City of Goose Creek: $1.5 million
  • City of North Charleston: $39.6 million
  • Town of Mount Pleasant: $8.3 million
  • Town of Summerville: $5.6 million

Berkeley County would have the most to lose with $95,447,411 estimated in losses, followed by Charleston County at $71,630,061 and Dorchester County at $5,879,434.

The Washington, D.C.,-based The Center for Security Policy posted new Congressional District Reports to aid in estimation of the potential local economic impacts of sequestration. The reports are free and available online to the public at http://forthecommondefense.org/districts.

To view detailed reports with 2011 data showing the 18 percent sequestration cuts for all U.S. states and territories, counties and cities go to http://forthecommondefense.org/reports

To see details on military contracts within Scott and Congressman Jim Clyburn's districts, see the attached PDFs.

The data release is not without ties to politics. The Center for Security Policy cites Aerospace Industries Association in its press release, quoting:

“Four out of five likely voters in critical battleground states want our leaders in Washington, DC to find an alternative to 'sequestration' budget cuts before the November elections take place, according to a Harris Interactive online poll.”

According to the think tank, Congressional District Reports are a tool to help local officials and businesses prepare for the possible impact of job losses and harm to local communities from the sequestration budget cuts.   These sequestration defense budget cuts will be an estimated total of 18% or more when combined with earlier budget cuts.

Somebody is going to have to give up some money from the government if they are ever going to reduce the deficit and balance the budget. Otherwise we just go 'over the financial cliff' like Greece.

The validity of CSP's report is questionable, to me. I mean, did DoD *really* pay three-quarters of a million for pest control at a Chas facility in one year? It includes a lot of one-time expenses, too, which are NOT future losses.

sequestration (automatic, across-the-board budget cuts ) wont happen...it was part of a kabuki dance orchestrated by the GOP extreme right's stupid position on the debt ceiling...

eventually after much posturing (BS) there will be something like a 10(cuts) to 1(revenue) agreement...or something like the boles/simpson plan.

if BO is re-elected the country will not go over a financial cliff...there will be a FDR recovery...but;

the prospect of MITT being elected scares the hell out of me...butbutt even if hell freezes over and mitt is elected...the USA will not go over a cliff...and;

the rich get richer and the poor get poorer...and people will die because they have no comprehensive health care...

I dunno stan, it seem like the GOP has this crazy belief that even though they have a 14% job approval rate that people will blame the president and not the congress if this happens. They are more intent on making the president a one term president than in making America work.

Some freshman lawmakers are advocating for Congress to skip the lame-duck session entirely after the election, regardless of issues that still need to addressed. Members of Congress were elected to serve a full term -- not head home early for the holidays. Congress needs to do its job and address the fiscal cliff, farm bill, cyber-security, and make other important decisions.

This Congress is on pace to be the 'least productive in modern history," according to Roll Call. In nearly every measure of productivity, the 112th Congress has done less than any other since 1947; they've passed the fewest number of bills, enacted nearly the fewest laws and passed the fewest measures. This is primarily because the GOP has controlled the Senates ability to vote on bills with the broken filibuster process and they have also broken all records in submitting amendments, in particular as a dilatory tactic or as a way to derail rather than improve legislation. What Republicans are doing today is unprecedented in the history of the nation. During the 2009-10 Congress, Republicans filibustered 137 times. So far in the current Congress, there have been 84 more. From 1840-1900, there were 16 total.

Being the majority doesn't even matter anymore unless you have 60 to break the filibuster. Congress is broken.

@JoSCh

"This Congress [112th] is on pace to be the 'least productive'"... exceeding the 'do nothing' 80th...which reelected truman...history will repeat...ie, the 112th is on pace to reelect BO...

irony of ironies the 112th' JOB#1 was to make BO a one 'termer'...

thanks T-GOPs...the odds are there will be a repeat of history re control of congress...ie;

'Republicans gained a majority in both chambers for this Congress [80th]. The Democrats had the majorities in the previous Congress and they regained them in the next Congress'

go for it 112th! BLOCK BO (maybe 1984 newspeak for elect BO)

[CLIP] The Eightieth United States Congress met from January 3, 1947 to January 3, 1949, during the third and fourth years of Harry S. Truman's presidency...Republicans gained a majority in both chambers for this Congress. The Democrats had the majorities in the previous Congress and they regained them in the next Congress. WOW! some just dont really get it! Maybe it is me that doesnt but the way I see things today is that for the first 2 years of Obamas Presidency he had a Democratically controlled House and Senate and they did NOT PASS a budget for America. Instead Obama created stimulus plans, bailouts, and added billions then trillions to our national debt. He has made numorous Executive Orders that challenge our US Constitution and even to eliminate our congress if he deams necessary for a dictatorship. Seriously, he has travelled the globe and appologized for America and has even hosted the Muslim Brotherhood at the White House yet he turns away the Israeli Prime Minister, Americas biggest allie. Again, seriously maybe I dont get it. But the way I see things have developed in America is that we are a nation devided and when the moment is ripe for the picking Obama will sieze the white house and institute his martial law agenda and create his dictatorship. So to say the GOP is all to blame....think back to the first 2 years of Obamas Presidency when he had Democratic control over all 3 legislative branches of the American Government.

@J Gilchrist

FYI

[CLIP]
111th Congress 2009–2011: SENATE DEM 58/57 GOP 40/41 I 2; HOUSE: DEM 257 GOP 178
112th Congress 2011–2013: SENATE DEM 51 GOP 47 I 2; HOUSE DEM 193 GOP 242
From January 3 to April 28, 2009, prior to Senator Arlen Specter's switch to the Democratic Party, there was one fewer Democratic seat and one vacancy. The vacancy was filled as an additional Democratic seat July 7, 2009, when Al Franken was sworn in. The 58th Senate Democratic seat was regained September 25, 2009 after Paul G. Kirk Jr. (D-Mass.) was sworn in as the late Senator Edward M. Kennedy's interim replacement. [end clip]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Party_divisions_of_United_States_Congresses

as all know in the senate 60 votes are needed to control...so BO/Dems only had of the house for 2009...not control of both houses for two years.

WOW! This info has been PATCH Posted before and available to googlers for years...why do some keep posting ad nauseam mis-information...they must know better.

WOW!WOW! '...he deams necessary for a dictatorship. Seriously...'

SERIOUSLY:)... they must know better and have to be smarter than rush...

PS
re: '...think back...'

think back to year (2009) BO inaugurated when W policies were still in effect: DJI at around 6-7,000; 'jobs being lost at around 750,000 per month; and economy in free fall'

think NOW: DJI around 12-13,000; think tho not enough, adding jobs; and think most economic metrics trending positive

THINK BACK to years preceding 1929 depression and 2008 recession...think back to years preceding RR trickle down, policies

think there were GOP presidents, 8-10 yrs, prior 1929 and 2008...think prior RR upper bracket tax rates around 70%.

THINK facts: not GOP bumper sticker, sound bite, talking points.

indeed THINK!
