'Scoundrels' Musical Debuts Thursday

Wando High puts on 'raunchy' comedic musical for four nights.

Thursday marks the beginning of a four-night showing of the musical comedy "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels," performed by Wando High School’s Fine Arts Department.

Forty Wando students are involved in the production, which features elaborate sets, lavish costumes, lights and a live orchestra.

Based on the popular 1988 film, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels centers on two con men — suave and sophisticated Lawrence Jameson and small-time crook Freddy Benson — who try to out-con each other.

Students call the show "raunchy" for its bawdy script and somewhat suggestive outfits and dance moves, but mostly the musical delivers laugh after laugh.

“Even though this is a newer show, it is in the style of some of the ‘screwball comedy’ movies of the 1930s," said director Lori Carroll.  "Lawrence and Freddy are almost modern day versions of Bing Crosby and Bob Hope. … It’s sophisticated, but still cool and catchy.”
