Mayor: Town Getting Big-Time Retailers

Swails announces Home Depot, Sam's Club and Academy Sports.

Mount Pleasant will soon be home to three large-scale chain retailers, according to Mayor Billy Swails.

Home Depot, Sam’s Club and Academy Sports will all present plans to locate in Mount Pleasant at a February planning commission meeting, Swails said on Thursday during a Mount Pleasant Business Association meeting.

“They want to come, and we want them to come,” Swails said.

Cracker Barrel also has plans to locate in Mount Pleasant, and that project should be complete by December, he said. It will be located near Laing Middle School, he said.

The three large retailers, however, have not formalized their plans, but they will all locate in a 40-acre property on Hwy. 17 across the street from Mount Pleasant Towne Centre, the mayor said.

Speaking to a group of businesspeople on Thursday, Swails praised the project as a job creator that fulfills constant requests for more retail from residents.

“We have asked these people. It’s not like we have sat on our hands,” Swails said. “I think everyone wants it. I don’t want people to go to Charleston. We deserve everything that everyone else has.”
