Firefighters Battle Blaze on Lettered Olive Lane

Watermark home suffers extensive damage following second-story fire.

A home in the Watermark development off Rifle Range Road suffered extensive fire and water damage following a morning blaze.

Flames erupted around 10 a.m. on Lettered Olive Lane. More 30 firefighters and seven fire trucks worked to bring the blaze under control, said Battalion Chief Jimmy Johnston.

"The call came in as a chimney fire, but we haven't even confirmed that yet, due to the magnitude of the fire," Johnston said. "We've got investigators coming, and they'll determine that in the next couple days."

Firefighters attacked the flames from inside the three-story home at first, but had to pull back because conditions became too dangerous, Johnston said. Instead, firefighters used two ladder trucks to spray water on the structure from the exterior.

The fire may have spread up a gas fireplace chimney or stove vent into the second and third floor and into the attic. When firefighters arrived, the blaze was already concentrated in the attic, which made firefighting efforts more difficult.

Mount Pleasant called in Charleston Fire to watch over the town as it moved all its manpower to the home. There were no injuries, but the house is more than 50 percent damaged, Johnston estimated.
