Expansion Planned for Shem Creek Park

Town seeking public input on proposed expansion.

The Town of Mount Pleasant is planning an expansion of the boardwalks at the popular Shem Creek Park on Colemand Blvd.

The town plans a two-hour public hearing May 28 at 6 p.m. to get input on the proposal. The park opened in 2011 and cost $8.5 million to build.

The park is mostly a network of boardwalks and docks along the creek. It provides visitors up-close views of the marsh and access to fishing.

The project was initially unpopular because of its cost. A lawsuit with a landowner delayed the project. And a commercial dock at the park meant for shrimpers has yet to be used.

The May 28 hearing is meant to get feedback from residents and stakeholders. It will last two hours.

"The Town has a unique opportunity to continue the waterfront boardwalk along the creek's edge and would like to discuss the scope of the plan with residents and stakeholders," a town press release reads. "Come learn, ask questions, and provide comments about this exciting upcoming project"

The release encourages residents to seek more information from project manager Kevin Mitchell at (843) 884-1229.
