Deputy Arrested on DUI Charge

Deputy charged after being involved in early morning crash.

A Charleston County Sheriff's Deputy faces DUI charges today after an early morning crash in West Ashley.

It happened around 2:30 a.m., according to a news release from the sheriff's department. Deputy Nicholas Wagner, 37, had been involved in the crash on the ramp of Interstate 526 at Savannah Highway.

Wagner was booked into the county jail and is now on paid administrative leave, according to Major James Brady, the sheriff's spokesman.

The deputy was in his personal vehicle and was not on the job at the time of the arrest. It was Wagner's first DUI offense, according to the news release.

This is the latest in a string of arrests involving police officers accused of driving while under the influence. That officer made veiled threats against the arresting officer.
