Darkness to Light Official Arrested on DUI Charges

Officers find abuse advocacy chief operating officer asleep at red light, according to report.

The chief operating officer of Darkness to Light has been charged with DUI after a police officer reported finding the man asleep behind the wheel at a traffic light in Mount Pleasant, according to a police report.

Matt Grayson has been the chief operating officer for the noted child sex abuse advocacy group since January 2012, according to his LinkedIn profile.

At around 2:30 a.m. on Dec. 8, police spotted Grayson's Dodge pick-up stopped at the intersection of U.S. 17 and Houston Northcutt Boulevard. Grayson, 42, was awakened by an officer.

Grayson reportedly failed three field sobriety tasks, such as stating the alphabet and walking tests, according to the police report. The officer wrote that Grayson stumbled during the tests and had trouble exiting his vehicle.

The suspect was arrested at the scene, and a breath test later recorded an alcohol level of .14, according to the report. That's nearly double the legal limit for driving, which is .08.

He posted a $1,200 bond and was released, according to court records. Grayson is due in court Jan. 2, 2013.

Jolie B. Logan, Darkness to Light CEO, provided a written statement to the Post and Courier.

“Our thoughts are with Matt and his family during this time. We respect all driving safety laws and encourage all citizens to do likewise," Logan said. “This is now a private legal matter for one of our employees and we support his efforts for privacy at this time."

Headquartered in Charleston, Darkness to Light is a nationally known sex abuse prevention and victim advocacy organization. Founded in 2000, the non-profit provides national education and advocacy programs to prevent and identify child sexual abuse.
