Customer Reports Rude Walmart Worker to Police
Customer service worker suspended following incident.
We've all been there: A retail employee is talking to a co-worker while we wait in line, seemingly invisible to the chattering colleagues.
Most folks just endure it, or perhaps clear their throat to gain some attention, but when a Charleston woman decided to go a little further, a Walmart store employee's reaction required police involvement and resulted in the employee being suspended on the spot.
It happened Dec. 9 at the Walmart on Proprietors Place in Mount Pleasant, according to a police incident report. That's when the Charleston resident went to the customer service counter to return an item. After waiting, she decided to ask one of two talking employees if "she was ready to assist her."
That's when the employee called the customer "rude," according to the report. The employee "stated she was discussing something with a fellow associate and (the customer) had no business interrupting them."
The argument continued, but eventually settled down when another employee took over the transaction. The customer went on about her shopping elsewhere in the store, according to the report.
But later, the employee again called out to the customer and began yelling threats, the customer told police. Eventually the argument became physical and an employee and the victim's husband had to step in between the women, according to the police report.
Though police list the employee as a suspect in the disturbance, the Walmart worker told police that the customer's husband was involved in the physical confrontation and that she was fearful the customer was waiting around the store to engage her in an assault.
Walmart managers told a police officer they were reviewing video of the incident and that the employee had been suspended until further notice. Police are letting the store sort out the matter administratively.
This Walmart also was the scene of a brutal employee stabbing in 2011 and a high-dollar theft of Apple products in October of the same year.

My 81 year old dad lives in Mt. Pleasant! That store sounds dangerous.

Fortunately there are two Walmarts to choose from in Mount Pleasant. But if you consider all the Walmarts in the Charleston area, this one probably has fewer calls for police assistance. (I'm assuming, obviously, but I shop there and feel safe.)

Pepsi? What are you, some kinda liberal Yankee, JoSCh? I bet you put it in a reusable grocery sack, didn't you? ;)

I actually don't really care about the brand really as diet Coke and diet Pepsi taste the same to me and I drink whichever is cold at work. I prefer the Pepsi cube as it saves space in my beer fridge as it's configured, and it's usually the first display when I walk in the store.
But yes, and yes. :)
Also, I still don't get an email notification when an editor posts, and I'm not sure if that is a bug or a feature. I noticed this when I came to taunt the Ambassador.

Hmm... That's weird about the alerts. I usually check the box so I don't get updates, so I'd imagine you all get them when I post. Are you getting the newsletter? We had a big accidental system purge a while back. (Separate issue, but I'm asking all our regular users.)

No apparent description of the Walmart employee or the customer or must I just guess?

If you were to guess, what are the descriptive terms you're primarily concerned with? I understand if you don't answer...

I didn't include their names since no one faces criminal charges. I can post the report if you'd like.

Almost every time I've ever gone into that Walmart I've encountered a rude employee. Forget politeness or friendliness. Your lucky if they give you all of your bags when you leave.

I think that Walmart trains their employees to ignore customers when possible. I always have to initiate help from a Walmart employee, it's never the other way around. Has anyone ever had a Walmart manager greet them or thank them for shopping? It's self service shopping and nothing more. Tip: if you want to save $100 every trip to Walmart, do NOT use their Uhaul sized shopping carts.
