Charleston 'Overdue, Vulnerable' for Hurricane

Charleston region lands on Weather Channel's Top 10 list.

The Charleston region is overdue and vulnerable for significant damage if this hurricane season delivers a direct hit, according to a new report from the Weather Channel.

Charleston is No. 8 on the Weather Channel's annual rankings. Nearby Savannah ranks No. 6. The most unprepared city, according to the report, is Tampa, Fla., which hasn't had a direct impact since the 1920s. Its huge population makes it a difficult city to evacuate, the report cited.

The 2013 Atlantic Hurricane Season officially started June 1. Forecasts call for an unusually active season.

Though Charleston learned a lot when Hurricane Hugo ravaged the Lowcountry 24 years ago, the lack of a major storm in the interim may result in the region being caught unprepared.

"Many cities and towns can go years without being impacted by a hurricane or tropical storm," the Weather Channel writes. "That can lead to a feeling of complacency that can be dangerous, or even deadly, when a hurricane hits."
