Charleston Catholics Honor Pope Benedict

Morning service pays homage to retiring Pope's legacy.

An 8 a.m. mass at St. Patrick Catholic Church in downtown Charleston will pay homage to retiring Pope Benedict XVI.

At 2 p.m. Charleston time, Benedict's resignation will take effect. He's the first Pope in 600 years to step down as Pope. Virtually all his predecessor's held the position until death.

"Since his election in April 2005, the Holy Father has worked tirelessly for the good of the Catholic faithful worldwide," the Diocese of Charleston said in a statement released Wednesday. "St. Patrick Church will hold a special Mass of Thanksgiving on Thursday for Pope Benedict XVI for his many years of service to the Church."
